FAST FACTS
What to bring to the slow boat:
- 1 or 2 liters of water with you per day
- Snacks and sandwiches, you can get them in Huay Xai the night/morning before departing
- Sunscreen
- A deck of cards or board game
- Shoes don’t matter as you’ll be asked to take them off when getting on board
- Headphones for listening to podcasts or music
- Your smile to enjoy the ride :)
How much does the slow boat cost:
- If you’re NOT on a budget, book the all inclusive package once you’re in Chiang Mai. They will pick you up at your hotel, bring you across the border to Laos and arrange the accommodation for the first night. I paid 2300 Baht in Chiang Mai (February 2024). Don’t book it from Pai, it’s too expensive and you have to drive through Chiang Mai anyways. (SEE PICTURE BELOW)
- If you’re on a budget, book each service separately (bus to Laos, slow boat, accommodation in Huay Xai for the first night)
How do I get a visa for Laos:
- Most people get their visa on arrival, it’s slow and costs 40USD
- If you know in advance when you’ll be taking the slow boat, consider getting the visa online, you’ll save time and stress when crossing the border. It’s fast and costs 50USD
